The Lost City of Z

The lost City of Z is based of a 2009 book by the same name authored by David Grann.

Staring a variety well known actors, who's characters are Col. Percival Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam), Henry Costin (Robert Pattinson), Arthur Manley (Edward Ashley) and Nina Fawcett (Sienna Miller), and Jack Fawcett (Tom Holland)

The main plot is about a British explorer Percy Fawcett played by Charlie Hunnam, who journeys into the Amazon, where he discovers evidence of a previously unknown, advanced civilization that may have once inhabited the region. Despite being ridiculed by the scientific establishment, who views the indigenous populations as savages, the determined Fawcett, supported by his devoted wife, son, and aide-de-camp, returns to his beloved jungle to prove his case.

The general theme of the movie can be understood to be Action Adventure and Historical genre, as story takes place at deep jungles of Bolivia, or as mentioned in the movie, “Amazonia”. Here the constant reminder of the movie pursues the idea of perseverance and even to the point of Obsession, as the main protagonist, Percy Fawcett, is determined to prove his word and uphold his family name.

If you were to be a history junkie, I would say this is a movie for you, as it has a lot of real-life references to the actual story of Colonel Percy Fawcett, a British explorer. Those looking for somewhat of an Indiana Jones like movies will not be disappointed, if anything he takes up the real-life role of Indiana Jones.

This movie captures the times in which it takes place very well, which is during the early 20th century, from the nineteen hundred to the mid-twenties. The Jungles and the indigenous tribesmen really help in creating an immersive experience. Where a real sense of fear of the unknown and helplessness can be felt if one were to be put into such situations like exploring a vast jungle not really knowing exactly where to head to, while fearing of dying form disease, wild animals and the so called indigenous, cannibalistic “savages”. The movie really captures the aesthetics that it likes to portray.

I would give this move a 6/10 Nested eggs, as while the story is very interesting, it tend to be repetitive and slightly slow, where you would hope more would happen, nothing really happens. In a way there are many anti-climatic parts in the movies. However, the movie redeems itself, in terms of Cinematography, great acting and a beautiful environment.
