The Battleship Island (2017)

Updated: Jan 28, 2022

Renowned director Ryu Seung Wan delivered a jingoistic film based on true-events which was set during World War II. “The Battleship Island '' is set at the site of a massive coal mine on Hashima Island where 400 Koreans were desolate as forced labourers. Koreans from all walks of life, living with cruelty and violence under Japanese colonial rule. The story begins when Lee Gang Ok (played by Hwang Jung Min) who intended to travel to Japan with his young daughter Sohee (played by Kim Su An) and his fellow musicians, were then dumped into what turned out to be a prison camp.

Come, Park Mu Young (played by Song Joong Ki), a US trained independence fighter who went there on a mission to save an influential Korean leader, Yoon (Lee Kyoung Young) who was later revealed to have rallied the fellow Koreans for his own prosperity. Along with Choi Chil Sung (So Ji Sub), a Seoul gangster who fights his way up the chain of command and a lady who was forced into sex slavery as a “comfort woman” named Mallyon (played by Lee Jung Hyun) devices a daring plan to evacuate all the Koreans from the island.

With top-tier and stellar number of casts and huge scale of budgeted at $22.3M, this film ultimately attracted the audiences in their exceptionally realistic episodes that brings an imaginative insight of how the Koreans’ suffering during the war. Perfect 10/10 for me!
